New Year Resolution – Move your resources from feeding the well-of to helping the needy
Article written by: Anonymous
Winter and festive season is upon us and it makes us all think about the homeless and less fortunate people during this time. There is something, we as Hindus or the devotees of any temple could do this season. We Hindus can resolve this for our New Year’s resolution -
- Instead of cooking and feeding hundreds of people at the temple every Sunday, the sponsoring family can make small amounts of Halwa or Kheer or any Prasad for the deities and the devotees and donate the money to the, Food Bank or to any other charity of their choice locally, or abroad
- Collect tinned or non perishable food items for the Food Bank
- Collect winter coats, sleeping bags and blankets for the homeless people
- Collect toiletries, children’s items for Women’s shelter ( Centre for abused women) where they constantly need supplies for children as well as adults
If you agree with any of these suggestions, please take action and stop this unnecessary waste of feeding hundreds of financially stable and physically able people every week. The Hindu temples within GTA area are seldom involved in any catastrophic or humanitarian efforts for the general population.
During an Optimist Club meet recently, I was ashamed to call myself a Hindu where in Ontario we have over 20 huge temples where thousands of devotees gossip and eat every week without a concern for our fellow humans. Most of the churches who were represented at this meeting organize food drives or warm dinners during Thanksgiving and Christmas season. Yes, we had Diwali but did we Hindu’s or any temple organized anything?
If you agree with this sentiment and are willing to help, start from your local temples. Ask the temple management to implement this “NO SELF-FEEDING“ policy. There are so many activities the temple can be spending our resources.
Do consider this in your new year resolution.
Thank you, and best wishes and a happy fulfilling new year for you and your family.
